To recreate the sort of garden beloved by our ancestors, include the old garden roses. The old roses date back for centuries, are hardier than some modern hybrids, and include a large variety of colors and scents.

What classifies a rose as an old garden rose? According to the American Rose Society, old garden roses are antique rose varieties that were introduced before 1867.

Old roses grow well in poor conditions and are the easiest type of rose to care for. If planted in rich soil that drains well, they will continue to bloom for many years. They prefer a light feeding schedule and require a bit of patience. They bloom only when they are ready to bloom.

Roses of every name and type are favorites of almost everyone. But one type of rose that seems especially charming and sophisticated, beginning with its name, is the English rose.

Many songs, stories and books have carried that romantic name. But English roses are especially deserving of a name that traditional beauty and refinement.

Origins of English Roses

English roses were first introduced by a hybridizer in the 1960′s. They are a group of rose varieties that were created as enhanced versions of some of the Old Roses.

Although a rose is a special flower in its own right and would not seem to need enhancement, the hybridizer found a way to make the new English rose varieties even more delightful.

William Shakespeare wrote, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, By any other name would smell as sweet.” From the days of Romeo and Juliet to modern times, the red rose has been synonymous with love.

There are many famous red rose varieties, from the red rose of Lancaster, which is perhaps the first cultured rose variety, to the hybrid tea rose, Mister Lincoln. In Greek and Polish languages the word rose itself denotes the color red.

Today, roses are popular all around the world. Originally, however, roses grew abundantly only in Central Asia. The Persians and Egyptians, who later developed a cultivated variety, discovered the wild rose.

A red rose held in a person’s hand symbolizes socialism and social democracy to the United Kingdom Labor Party. Later, several other European and South American socialist parties also adopted the red rose as their symbol.

Climbing Roses for Old-Fashioned Beauty

Some say roses aren’t climbers by nature and that they must be trained. Whether or not that is true, climbing roses are well worth the extra effort it takes to grow them.

Just think….a climbing rose can grow to 40 feet up a tree. Yes, it’s possible! If you prefer a smaller version, there are also miniature climbing roses. Any rose is beautiful, but you might say climbers have a farther “reach.”

Want an image that a flower lover can appreciate? Imagine a huge field in the warm summer sunshine. It is a vineyard with rows and rows of grape vines extending into the distance. Now instead of the grapevines, visualize rows and rows of climbing roses! What a vision that would be to behold.

Choosing the Right Climber

It is work taking the time to choose your climbing rose with care. Some can tolerate only small amounts of sunshine and will bloom only with the proper amount of sunlight. Others may not do well in full shade.

When you think of antiques, a rose might not immediately come to mind. But antique roses have been around for centuries. All rose varieties developed before 1867 are considered to be antiques.

Shakespeare used the word eglantine when speaking of the rose in his sonnets and plays. Eglantine is described in the dictionary as a European rose with sweet-scented leaves and pink flowers.

Just as an emporium is a large store with a wide variety of things for sale, there are antique rose emporiums to delight rose growers. You can buy an antique rose already rooted from a rose emporium.

How do you prepare to grow an antique rose? First, choose a planting location that allows for several hours of morning sunlight. It is best to give the plant room for healthy air movement as the bush will grow and develop.
